The University of Vienna is hosting the European Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court 2024

02.04.2024

After it was not possible to hold the European rounds of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot Court in both 2020 and 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Point of Contact (NPOC) Space Law Austria at the University of Vienna is making its third attempt this year.

They are now scheduled to take place in Vienna from April 8 to 12, 2024, mostly at the Vienna Juridicum.

Fortunately, the partners and supporters of the last attempts are back on board, so that the final will take place in the courtroom of the Constitutional Court (Freyung 8), as planned in 2020.

The Mayor of Vienna is also once again inviting guests to the Awards Dinner in the Knights' Hall of Vienna City Hall.

The Welcome Reception will take place on Monday, April 8 at 6 p.m. on the top floor of the Juridicum. Dean Brigitta Zöchling-Jud will give welcoming remarks.

On Thursday, April 11, there will be a round table on the latest developments in space law, followed by a networking event with a buffet at 6 pm in the new premises of the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) at Schwarzenbergplatz 16.

Further information on the European Rounds of the Manfred Lachs Moot Court can be found here.

This year's case deals with "Dark and Quiet Skies", the problem of "light pollution" caused by large swarms of small satellites. A conflict with the interests of astronomical research, which is becoming ever greater in reality in view of more than 2,200 satellite launches per year. The authors of the case perhaps want to get ideas from the younger generation on how this conflict could be resolved...

The event is supported by the European Center for Space Law (ECSL), the BMK (Federal Ministry for Climate Protection) and ESPI (European Space Policy Institute).
