ESPI Report on Space Environment Capacity published

20.04.2022

The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) has recently published a report on Space Environment Capacity, building on ESA's Space Environment Capacity Concept and examining the feasability of a threshold-based approach to ensure safety and sustainability in outer space.

ESPI has recently published its latest report, focussing on Space Environment Capacity. A report launch event was organised on 20 April to give an overview of the ESPI report and the underlying ESA concept. After presentations by Matija Rencelj and Clémence Poirier (both ESPI) and Francesca Letizia (ESA), a moderated discussion allowed for an interesting exchange of views among industry and government representatives.

The report conducts an in-depth assessment of a possible metric-based threshold approach to the orbital environment. It also offers insights to the difficulties of translating a threshold model into the legal, political and diplomatic framework currently governing the use of Earth orbits. An introduction, as well as the full report, can be found here.
